In order to deal with everything that’s going on in the world right now, you sometimes need to take a step back and free up some time to do the things you love. Given his hectic schedule as a globetrotting DJ and producer, Armin van Buuren knows like no other how important that is. It also inspired him to create – and release – his ‘RELAXED’ album, and that proved the perfect opportunity for us to ask him how he spends his time away from the rush of everyday life.

“Have you ever done something that made you completely lose track of time? That’s what I get when I grab a surfboard and start riding the waves. Even though I still need a lot of lessons to properly get the hang of it, it’s one of the best ways for me to destress.”

“This is the method I use most in my daily routine. Whether I grab a moment of mindfulness as soon as I wake up in the morning or simply at a time when it all gets too much, the exercises and mediation techniques clear my mind and help me focus on the things that really matter. It’s so easy to do and doesn’t take up a lot of time either, which is why I love it so much.”

BBQ weekends

“If you’ve spent some time on my socials channels, chances are you’ve seen me post about my BBQ weekends and the Big Green Egg BBQ I use. I don’t normally get to spend a lot of time with my friends, so going away for a BBQ weekend with my friends is a great way for me to kick back and live life without a care in the world.”

(Mountain) biking

“I don’t think a lot of you know about this, but I love going out to the countryside for a bit of mountain biking or riding in the dunes along the Dutch coastline. It doesn’t take me a lot of time to get out there and do it, which makes it the perfect quick getaway when I need a bit of me-time. It also helps me get in a good deal of exercise, which I feel is a must if you want to be healthy."

“And finally: gaming. Most of you already know I like firing up my Playstation in between studio sessions as a way get my thoughts straight. Especially with the more story-driven games, there’s an entire world, story and narrative for me to explore, similar to the way people can lose themselves in a good book or amazing movie. Gaming is for grown-ups too, you know." :)
