Armada University: Ørjan Nilsen’s Finish My Record contest winner surprised by Ørjan himself!

February 28, 2019
We’ve received a truckload of submissions for Ørjan Nilsen’s Finish My Record contest, and it’s been an absolute pleasure listening to every single one. But, even though every edit was unique and catchy in its own way, there can be only one winner. Our congratulations go out to Mexican producer AGEZ, who delivered a huge track and won himself a collaboration with Ørjan Nilsen to be released on his In My Opinion label. Go a few scrolls down to see Ørjan Nilsen surprise the contest winner in a video call! We also sat down with AGEZ for an exclusive interview which can also be found below!

Where and when did you first hear of this contest on Armada University and what was your initial reaction? Why did you choose to compete?
I got an e-mail from Armada University about the Ørjan Nilsen course and contest. I specifically chose this competition to enter because I love Ørjan’s music and I felt it was a great opportunity for me to connect with him. It has also been a dream of mine to collaborate with him, so this was really a chance in a lifetime!

Can you tell us a bit about your approach for this contest? What did you aim for and which tools helped you get the result you wanted?
I tried to impress with the sheer quality of the track and the energy of the production... The major tool, of course, was my motivation to make this work. But technically speaking, I couldn’t have done it with Sylenth1 or Nexus.

How does it feel knowing that Ørjan Nilsen picked your edit as the contest’s winning submission?
Very happy and excited, mostly. For someone who’s as much a legend of Trance as Ørjan to pick my edit and want his name on it, is a dream come true. It’s also very motivating, because it means that I’ve done something right. I want to keep doing this for the rest of my life and this is something that I’ll never forget.

You've won a collaboration with Ørjan Nilsen, to be released on his In My Opinion label. What went through your mind at the exact moment you heard the news in that surprise video call we set up? And, now that you've had the chance to process it, how does it feel at this time?
When Ørjan announced that I had won, I just shut down a bit. I was very nervous, but it definitely was a very special moment for me! It kind of feels like your heroes can become your partners. I’ve been working so hard for years now, and this tells me that all of the work I put in has definitely worth it!

You've been making music for quite a while now. Do you feel that this opportunity could help you land a breakthrough?
Of course! I mean, all of it is part of a process and I think this is a really big step for my career. It’s like my debut to the world. Something that was so very far away at times has now come within reach. Now I just want to keep working hard to achieve all my dreams.

What would be your best advice for young music producers pursuing their first release or competing in their first contest?
Keep working hard! I think Armada University is a great way to learn and see how the professionals work. I think it’s great that they give us (aspiring) producers a chance to achieve our dreams, not only by offering these courses and providing demo feedback, but also by launching contests that give us the opportunity to win a release on the label.

Apart from that, I’d like to suggest those talents to try to learn from everyone, and to keep practicing with different techniques and different ways to make a track. There’s always new stuff to learn or master as a producer.

Is there anything else you’d like to say about Ørjan Nilsen, Armada University or this whole contest?
I just want to thank everyone that formed this amazing platform for producers like us! You are helping us a lot with this great platform, and it’s part of my dream to be able to help people like you are doing now!

It’s actually very hard to find people like you guys in this industry, guys that really love music and just live for it, just like Ørjan! The only thing I want is to make the world a better place with my music and to share my music with other people to make them feel better and inspire them to be better. That’s exactly what Ørjan reflects and what I see on Armada as well! You are really helping us reach our dreams! Thank you!
