“When Maykel Piron, CEO of Armada Music, first shared with us his son Mick’s Leukemia diagnosis, it was devastating news. We are not only colleagues but friends, not to mention fellow parents. It wasn’t long after that Maykel decided to construct an Armada team for Alpe d’HuZes”, says George Hess about the formation of the #WEARMADA Alpe d’HuZes team.
Since 2006 Alpe d’HuZes developed into the largest Dutch fundraising event to finance research to fight cancer, taking place on the legendary Alpe d’Huez in the French Alps. With pride and enthusiasm some members of the #WEARMADA Alpe d’HuZes 2017 team would like to inform you about their mission. “Having someone close fight the disease, maybe a friend or a family member, is a cruel wake-up call to the fact that no one is safe from cancer”, says Dan.
The #WEARMADA team consists of 36 people with an international sub-team of 9 members from all over the world: Jamie Raeburn, George & Jamie Hess, Catalin & Dan Muraru, Jens Thele, Tom De Meijer, Nick Veldeman and Ashley Gay. Jens says: “I immediately asked Maykel if it would be possible to take part as well. I truly believe that the energy created by everyone involved in this charity race will have a positive effect on the people suffering from this terrible disease and will help them in their fight against it.”
For more than a decade thousands of cyclists, runners and hikers have climbed Alpe d’Huez on the first Thursday of June. Some of them up to six times in one day. "That's a bit frightening”, adds Jamie R. Alpe d’Huez is part of the French Alps situated in the East of France and features a 14 kilometer climb with an average gradient of 8% towards the finish line at ski resort Huez. Alpe d’Huez is climbed regularly in the Tour de France, “A grand challenge, but 100% worth the effort”, as Catalin puts it.
A challenge taken on by thousands every year that turns emotions related to cancer - like anger, anxiety and fear - into strength and the willpower to perform. "For some it is just a way to ‘give back’ and contribute says Dan. Others carry memories of loved ones with them. George & Jamie for example, “We will run with Jamie’s mother Joan (who beat cancer) at the forefront of our minds”. Each one of them with a personal motivation but all of them united in the fight against cancer, inspiring people not to give up. “Cancer can attack anybody. I want to inspire as many people as possible to fight back against this terrible disease”, adds Jens.
In the process of training and preparing for this challenging event, all participants are reaching out to their personal network for sponsorship and support and are thus spreading and consolidating the joint fight against cancer. Catalin explains: “Why am I doing this? We need to raise money and get as much publicity around the ‘fight against cancer’ message as possible. I believe we have a real chance of raising important funds by doing this climb. Doing what hasn't been done before gets the news these days and also the money”.
Alpe d’HuZes, dubbed by George as a “once-in-a-lifetime experience”, is a 100% overhead free organisation, meaning every single euro donated goes into the designated Alpe d’HuZes/KWF Cancer Society fund, approved by the Dutch Government. Since 2006, Alpe d’HuZes has raised more than 140 million euros and has been able to finance countless research projects that aim to fight cancer and/or improve life expectancy of those diagnosed with cancer.
