Ashley Wallbridge: “Does it really matter what style it is?”October 8th, 2012
It’s been 8 months since the debut album of Ashley Wallbridge landed, and the world of EDM embraced it in all its diversity. ‘The Inner Me’ has brought a slew of forward-thinking tunes, perfectly representing the open-minded sound of the young talent. With his new track ‘Grenade’ rocking the Beatport Trance Top 10 and the remix album of ‘The Inner Me’ coming up, we hooked up with Ashley right before the Amsterdam Dance Event kicks in. And the one thing you learn from this interview, is that there’s no limit to the sound of the UK producer and DJ. Ashley:”Does it really matter what style it is?… I think not… I’ve always made music on how I feel, not what I should be expected to do.”
Hey Ashley! What’s going on? Survived another killing summer schedule?
Ashley:”Yooooooooo, yeah it’s been pretty mental, but always fun! Now on to the winter. Great…. Haha…”
You’ve witnessed one of the A State of Trance nights on Ibiza and were part of the Global Gathering festival, close to home. What other highlights did the season bring you?
Ashley:”Loads of amazing events over the last few months. Global and Ibiza were pretty special, Especially Global as its only 30 minutes away from my home and it’s a gig I’ve always wanted to play. One of the other highlights would be ‘Guaba Beach Bar’. It’s a place I play every year and I just did the closing party. AMAZING!! I think if you ask any DJ who has played Guaba they will tell you the same thing. It’s just one huge party from 3 in the afternoon till 10 at night. Definitely check that out!”
Congrats on the release of ‘Grenade’ by the way, it’s still rocking the Beatport Top 10! Looks like it hit in just as you intended, huh? ;)
Ashley:”Thanks.. After I released my album I wanted to experiment a little with different sounds. Grenade is a little different but with my core sound element in there as well. I didn’t know what to expect when making it to be honest. But you see the likes of Armin, Ferry, Gareth etc. playing it on a regular basis it made me happy. I have a few tracks done now which are a little different, so let’s see how they do when they come out, haha ;). ”
It’s now been nearly 8 months since your debut album ‘The Inner Me’ was released. How do you look back upon it now? What has the album taught you?
Ashley:”8 Months already? That’s gone so fast, seems like just yesterday when I made the first track. Doing the album has taught me a lot of things to be honest. I didn’t know how people would react to the album because there are so many different styles on there. I’ve always gone by the saying ‘A good track is a good track, no matter what style it is.’ These days EDM is such a huge variety of styles you can’t afford to pin point any genre. It kinda annoys me when someone says ‘That’s not trance/This is house or electro’. Does it really matter what style it is?… I think not… I’ve always made music on how I feel, not what I should be expected to do.”
A few months back you said you already had 3 tracks ready for the next album! What will be the biggest challenge in producing the follow-up to ‘The Inner Me’?
Ashley:”I have a few tracks written for my next album, but I’m in no rush to finish this. ’The Inner Me’ took about 1.5 years to finish, not because of time consuming track production. It was all about the balance of the album. Next is the remix album for ‘The Inner Me’. There are some amazing remixes and the balance of that is perfect again. I have an idea of how I want my next album to sound already. Plus I have the name ready as well, haha….”
There’s a follow-up of Grenade coming up in November. What can you reveal about it so far?
Ashley:”That’s true… I don’t want to give too much away at the moment but it’s a new vocal track from me featuring a vocalist which has never done dance music before, in that respect it was a really exciting track for me and I can’t wait to share it with you soon :). It will be debuted at ADE….”
The Amsterdam Dance Event is nearly upon us! Will you be checking out the conference yourself?
Ashley:”Most definitely! Never been to ADE, I wanna check out a few people playing and have a drink ! Will be good fun for sure….”
You’ll be doing a special back 2 back set with Tom Fall! A good combination, or an exciting battle?
Ashley:”Bit of both really haha! We spoke on Skype the other day and had a chat what tracks to play etc. I don’t wanna give too much away but it’s going to be an epic show full of exclusives!”
What other shows should we visit to check you out in the next couple of weeks?
Ashley: ”Hmm, I have Chicago (Studio Paris) LA (Exchange) London (Ministry Of Sound) coming up in the next weeks. They should all be pretty cool. MOS is one of my favourite places to play. Atmosphere there is crazy!“
