Tom Fall: music happens

Tom Fall: music happens

February 6th, 2012

Maybe it’s the fact that the temperature doesn’t usually reach above zero when it’s winter in Finland. But the fact is that each of Tom Fall’s productions carry a deep warmth and melodic flow, highly energetic. The Finnish producer/DJ got into the picture with his ‘All This Time’ and ‘Stillness’ releases, followed by the catchy ‘Untouchable’. This week, the upcoming producer is our Artist of the Week. In celebration of his new ‘Ordinary World’ release and the fact that there’s lots more Tom Fall goodies ahead! Read on to find out what drove this artist to go for music full-time and what plans he’s got in stores for us.

Hey Tom! Congrats on being our ‘Artist of the Week’! How are you doing?
Tom:”Thank you very much! I’m doing great thanks, have been very busy in the studio lately. Happy times.”

This week is all about your new single ‘Ordinary World’. A very melodic prog-house track with a classical touch. How did this one come into being?
Tom:”Well we talked about a collab for so long with Heikki. I had some free time and visited him in the studio. After a while we just started to jam around with some chords and basic drums first. After a while we had the melody and the main theme done and since Ben, who is a good friend of Heikki’s was roaming around in the studio drinking coffee so we pitched him an idea of a short hook line and voilá, rest is history.”

It’s the follow-up to your collab with Jwaydan, ‘Untouchable’, which worked really well in the US. Why do you think that sound worked particularly well in the US?
Tom:”I personally think it’s because of the very catchy and simple melody Jwaydan wrote, the lovely lyrics and vocals as well. Was a fun project for me.“

Will there be any follow-up in the style of ‘Untouchable’? Another one with Jwaydan perhaps?
Tom:”Yes I think there will be one that is more laidback like ‘Untouchable’. If it’s with Jwaydan I can’t be sure as she’s very busy at the moment but we’ll see.”

Now, on to some past & present oriented questions. Your bio says you’re working on music fulltime. When was the moment you decided to do so?
Tom:”Well, this is something I never decided really, it kind of just happened. J My goal always was to earn my living with only music, I just didn’t expect it to actually happen so soon.”

You’re making a living as a DJ now. Is that working out in Finland for you or is it now the foreign bookings that pay the bills?
Tom:”At the moment, I pay my bills with the gigs in Finland and everything else is extra. But I have a feeling that that’s going to change at some point. ;)”

The Armada story started when ‘All This Time’ and ‘Stillness’ were released. Ever expected these to be such a positive breaking point in your career?
Tom:”I try to never expect anything big big BIG, but yeah the fact that I was signed to Armada felt really good. This has always been one of my dream labels back in the day when I started dj’ing and producing.”

You’ve done remixes for Aly & Fila, W&W, tyDi and many more. What makes it so fun doing remixes for big names like these?
Tom:”Remixing is really nice work for me, all the fun of producing and none of the stress of writing. I’m really flattered that my remixes have been so very well received and new remix requests keep coming in from bigger and bigger names. Although, I’m starting to slow down with the remixing and star focusing on new Tom Fall Original’s.”

There’s rumors about you working on an artist album! Anything you can reveal yet?
Tom:”That’s true, I’m working on my debut album. There’s nothing to reveal yet but there will be…..there will be. ;)”

Any other news or exciting stuff ahead we should know about?
Tom:”There will be some absolutely huge collabs coming this year as well as big solo original tracks o watch out!! I feel like this label could use some more….BASS!!”
