Alex M.O.R.P.H. puts his Hands On Armada

November 16th, 2010

The memory is what binds our past and future into today. Memories make us remember both good and bad times. For producer Alex M.O.R.P.H. it’s merely good times that inspired him to transform his favourite classics and bring them back to 2010. The classics on ‘Hands On Armada’ have all received the M.O.R.P.H. treatment, riding a sound emotional yet powerful, big room yet sensitive. As one of the most requested remixers in the trance scene, he’ll release the ‘Hands On Armada’ album, filled with new translations of Armada classics, on December 10th. Time to get behind the concept of this promising album and ask Alex why exactly he wanted to put his hands on them.

What’s the concept and thought behind the ‘Hands on Armada’ release?

Alex M.O.R.P.H.:“A lot of producers are asked to remix a single classic from time to time, but I think there hasn’t been any producer remixing a whole album of classics. This is unique and the first special thing about this album. And you know, if you see all the technology today and compare them to what was high end 10 years ago, the difference is simply amazing. The way people produce music, the way how to DJ, the possibilities and quality are out of this world! And this is another key thought behind the “Hands on Armada” concept. There are these fantastic and timeless compositions and sounds that marked a new era at that time—but they don’t sound up to date in 2010. The idea is not to make “just another remix” of a classic, but to transform the original spirit of these productions and gain the quality to the highest level. And we are sure that many people will be infected now as we have been a decade ago!”

How did you come up with the idea?

Alex M.O.R.P.H.:“Actually the idea was born while sitting down with my friend and manager Woody van Eyden. First it was just crazy talk, like ‘wouldn’t it be great…? Hahaha!’, but then we presented this idea to Armada Music. Armin has been one of my most important supporters over the past years and we hoped to catch his and his crew’s attention with this—and they really liked it and said ‘Okay Alex, show us 2 or 3 remixes for a start, and we’ll talk further into it. Choose whatever track you want from the entire Armada catalogue!’”

What made you want to remix these particular tunes?

Alex M.O.R.P.H.:“All of these tracks belong to my personal all time favorites in this music genre, simple as that! They open up a lot of memories for me. It was the time when Trance was starting to grow big and they have played an important role in the development of my own career as an artist. I still love these classics today, that’s why I wanted to put my hands on them.”

You’ve always been a more than welcome remixer, having done remixes for names like Armin, Faithless, Andy Moor, Paul van Dyk, Markus Schulz, Josh Gabriel, Max Graham and many more. What makes you such a good remixer?

Alex M.O.R.P.H.: “Haha, well I can’t say for sure to be honest. Luckily my remixes hit the taste of a lot of people. I’m really proud that people say I’m ‘such a good remixer’! ;-)”

What, to you, is the beauty of remixing?

Alex M.O.R.P.H.: “The beauty of remixing, that sounds really cool! The beauty is definitely to be able to put your own musical character into a production. It’s a big creative process that can make an energetic track out of a chill-out tune, or the other way round. Sometimes you hear a song, and you directly think ‘Hmm…this would be great if you do it like this or that, combined with XYZ!’. This imagination and creativity is the beauty of remixing. It’s not about ‘Yeah, when I remix this, I’ll be #1 on Beatport!’”.
