The sounds of tyDi
February 1st, 2010
Some of us just don’t need REM-sleep to live out their dreams. Tyson Illingworth, residing under his tyDi moniker, is one of the lucky few. The past 12 months of the life of this number one Australian DJ were made up with nothing but highlights. His debut album ‘Look Closer’ saw daylight in August, his ‘Global Soundsystem’ radioshow kicked off in November and divided over the year his tracks ‘Is It Cold’, ‘Somehow’ and ‘You Walk Away’ have travelled the globe and got stuck in the minds of thousands of dance lovers. Yes, tyDi is living the dream. With new track ‘Good Dream’ out on the AVA label, the youngster shows that sometimes reality truly is better than the ethereal surroundings of a dream. But that doesn’t mean there’s no room left for some more dreaming…
Highlights
During the final countdown towards a new and promising year for music, tyDi was living things up at a sold out stadium. With no one less but himself behind the decks, he said goodbye to an incredibly successful year in music. tyDi:”I had the most amazing NYE ever playing at a sold out stadium concert! I decided to make the show extra special by playing with a live string trio, a guitarist and my good friend Audrey Gallagher to sing along! We performed all my original tracks with live strings (Cello & Violins) and Audrey’s beautiful vocals filling up the stadium; certainly a night to remember!”
However, the absolute highlight of tyDi’s year is all about a 120 mm disc called ‘Look Closer’. tyDi:”That was a very big highlight in my adventure so far.”
But the adventure continues. Besides loading his schedule with gigs and production work, he now also spends his days preparing for the next episode of his radioshow Global Soundsystem. A two hour ride pass all things tyDi, proggy, trancy and good. tyDi:”Global Soundsystem has been going extremely well, it’s very quickly becoming available all over the world and the feedback has been brilliant. I am very excited about the whole project, I have big things planned for the show this year.”
Good Dream
One thing’s for sure, Tyson doesn’t have to count any sheep to enjoy some siesta. Instead, he’s all about the fiesta! His new track ‘Good Dream’ is currently scorching up the Beatport Trance chart. tyDi:” ‘Good Dream’ is my little weapon of mass destruction; I didn’t write it to be another big trance anthem, it’s purely designed to absolutely tear apart any big festival sound system. I’d say the coolest feature of ‘Good Dream’ is its bass line, I made it for the purpose of playing to big crowds over big sound systems – it’s a track that cuts through anything. The breakdown – the dreamy part -, that’s the bit where you close your eyes and get a little lost, but the payoff after that is huge. Hope you like it!”
It’s big room for sure – and hell yes do we like it! Though his earlier releases, like ‘Russia’ and ‘Under The Stars’, sound slightly different and more prog-housy than the full on trancy ‘You Walk Away’ and ‘Good Dream’, it’s not a conscious choice to change his sound to the trancier side of music. tyDi:” I don’t think I am headed in any particular direction with my style, ‘You Walk Away’ was a first for me and so was ‘Good Dream’. I know that they sound different to my previous work but it was not really a conscious decision. I just start making a song and see where it ends up. I don’t feel like I need to be limited to particular style or genre, it’s all just music right?”
More Audrey & more clubbing
After the magnificent ‘You Walk Away’, tyDi and Audrey Gallagher have been working on some interesting plans. tyDi:”Shhhh! You are giving away my secrets! Yes, there is a new tune with Audrey coming soon, it’s amazing. We have also been working on some more ambient / electronic stuff but you’re not allowed to hear it yet!”
We’ll impatiently wait, then. Speaking of waiting, while the Aussie fans are being treated to a tyDi set on a weekly base, the other continents still haven’t seen him play. Though he flew over to Holland to tear up the Trance Energy mainstage last year, there’s still a lot of countries he needs to set foot on. Good news though, cause…”This year, I have some tours being planned right now!”
But before he starts suffering from a permanent jetlag for flying all across the globe, he’s got more than enough on his hands with the Global Soundsystem tour. tyDi:”The Global Soundsystem tour was amazing! Audrey did a brilliant job and every gig was sold out. The Aussie crowds are very supportive of my work – I am a lucky guy!”
More tyDi
Looks like 2010 will be a promising year for mr. Illingworth. With 11 months left to rock 2010, it’s clear that this young, passionate music-freak has plenty of goodies in stores for us! tyDi:”I’ve been very busy in the studio lately. I have a lot of new originals to unleash and the new one with Audrey Gallagher. I’ve also been doing lots of remixes which are starting to come out now. Dennis Sheperd and I whipped up a nice little remix of Binary Finary’s ‘1998’ which has a massive tribal sound to it, so get ready for it!”
First, he’s going to warm you up with his ‘Good Dream’. Currently rocking the Beatport trance chart and finding its way to the public through the sets of the bigger DJ’s, there’s only one thing left for you to do: go get it!
