Randy Boyer revives Enmass

Randy Boyer revives Enmass

February 8th, 2010

A determined mind. A strong person. And last but not least, a talented producer. It’s American DJ/Producer Randy Boyer we’re talking about here. After years of success with his EnMass team-up, his production buddy Eric Tadla passed away in 2008. A big loss for the music industry, but an even greater loss for Randy. Luckily for us music lovers, he carried on. Randy Boyer got up and decided to breathe new life into EnMass. With a 2010 upgrade of ‘So Please’, Randy revives the EnMass moniker and unlocks a new era for the beloved trance alias behind ‘CQ’, ‘Beyond Horizon’, ‘Avalon’ and several other memorable tracks of the mid-2000′s. Randy’s trancy remix and the deep, progressive interpretation of Russian producer Alexander Popov find their way out into the world through the S107 label. Time for Armada Music to sound Randy out about the return of EnMass…is it back?

Armada: Though a bit late, happy New Year! Has the year 2009 treated you well?
Randy:”2009 was amazing. I had several solid releases and remixes on some pretty big labels. I also had my first European DJ appearance when I played at the legendary Monday Bar in Stockholm Sweden, then traveled to Finland for a couple DJ dates with Darude. 2009 also brought me to Central America (El Salvador) and a lot of cites in North America. I just recently redid my whole studio so I am geared up to make some killer tunes in 2010!”

Armada: What have you got lined up for 2010?
Randy:”Well, 2010 is going to be massive. I have so many things coming up, with releases on Armada & ISTMO Music, in the pipeline for winter/spring. I am also going to be partnering up with my good friend, Darude and start a record label. We are both going to have our own sublabel under the same label, mine is called ‘EnMass Music’ and his is called ‘DRD Music’. It’s going to be massive, I have been saving a lot of my favorite tunes that I have produced last year for this label, so I am extremely excited about this opportunity. As always, I will be hitting some more cities for gigs and travelling as usual.”

Armada: The year kicks off with an interesting release, with a new, 2010 version of ‘So Please’, coming out on the S107 label. How does it feel to see one of you and Eric Tadla’s tracks coming back?
Randy:”It’s quite an honor to tell you the truth. It’s really interesting about this track, because the original really didn’t get much attention because it was the flip side of ‘CQ’, and that track pretty much took over the summer in 2004. It was really great rerecording the vocals with Cari Golden and then also putting my 2010 sound to it. I think it’s going to be a solid release with lots of support. Eric would be proud.”

Armada: What memories do you have on producing ‘So Please’?
Randy: “Producing ‘So Please’ was a great collaboration with Eric, we always had a blast producing music but more importantly, we learned a lot from each other’s strengths. For ‘So Please’ (2004), we collaborated originally with the singer, Shimika Brice and the track was release on A State of Trance and was also a part of my first artist album, ‘West’. I have always loved the song and I wanted to give it a fresh 2010 feel. I connected with my good friend singer/songwriter Cari Golden and asked her to re-sing the tune and she was extremely happy to do so giving it that 2010 sound. Since 2004, I have really honed my skills a lot as a producer and have come a long way. My sound is more focused and unique to me, with funky basslines and beautiful melodies, which is why I wanted to create my own label. It just seems to be the next step to do, so I am moving forward.”

Armada: Being an experienced remixer and one of the creators of the original, are you pleased with Alexander’s remix?
Randy:”Alexander is an amazing producer, I was very honored when I got word that he was doing the mix. His productions are extremely hot right now, and it’s a beautiful mix of prog / trance that can be played at the beginning of the night or beef up the BPM’s and drop it during peak time. My remix has the BIG ROOM feel to it. Dirty bass lines, epic breakdown, you know the full on Randy Boyer style.”

Armada: Does this mean that EnMass is back? Or is there just no EnMass without Eric?
Randy:”EnMass will never be the same without Eric, however I have been doing stuff for years before and will continue to push the limits with unique productions just like we did. He taught me a lot too, and in that way, EnMass will always have an influence on my productions in the future.
Like I said in one of the questions before, I will be starting my new record label called EnMass Music, so that will carry a little weight, I know it’s something Eric always wanted as well, so I feel it is an appropriate time for it.”
